Is this the same as asking the council?

No. CheckMyPlot reports what public bodies have published as open data. It is not legal advice and not a local authority search. Confirm anything that affects your plans with the authority named in this report before you act.

Why postcode and not a full address?

A postcode is enough to answer most questions, because these designations are areas rather than single buildings. Where a designation only covers part of a postcode, the report says so and gives you the reference to check.

Does it cover the whole UK?

England, for now. Scotland and Wales publish their designations through different services, which are being added and tested before they go live.
